Adventures off the island

June 13, 2024
Fist day leaving once arrival, sourcing materials in the big city off the island.
Toronto Council Fire Native Cultural Centre met with Dakota Kevin Myron who gifted me birch bark and quills.
He also shared some advice and his life story which is similar to mine. Displacement of our people connects us in many ways.
It is custom to bring gifts and offerings for the exchange to happen respectfully. I gave 2 bracelets and 2 tobacco ties.
Next stop Native Child and Youth Services of Toronto where I was picking up sweetgrass. I had a nice surprise when I seen my cousin working the front desk.
behind us you can see a wooden structure which was a meeting lodge, so beautiful.
They gifted me materials of sweetgrass, peppermint tea, dried lavender, white buffalo sage.
I made these baby moccasins the night before and gifted them with 2 bracelets and 2 tobacco ties.
great trade in a custom fashion we value our barter and trading roots.
The greatest gift of all was having lunch with these two gems. Mentor Emilio who generously chose me to join this residency and my cousin Raylyn who I haven't seen in a year.
She took us to Nando's which was my first time and definitely not the last, new favorite!
Craft supply run to Fabric land was amazing to find everything on sale, 50% off.
Got back late evening to the supplies that I needed from our order with residency.
Spent the evening organizing and making the space comfortable and homey.

One of the best days filled with love and respect.

Fulfilled and joyful memories, Thank you Emilio for your patience and kindness.

Thank you to the residency organizers for caring and providing.

Thank-you to the artists for open doors and sharing.

I know this is just the beginning of a reciprocal relationship for each of us.

Miigwech gchi zhemnido kina gego emiizhiiaang -thank you creator for everything you do.

Always give thanks and bring gifts.

Love always,
Manidoo Bineshiinh 💝
